Åabusen.

A design comission for artist Ulrika Jansson.

“Åabusen” is a local scare creature in the river Viskan, Sweden. The tale of Åabusen was told to keep children away from the river’s possibly lethal whirlpools. In the exhibition “Ingen Å är en Ö”, Åabusen becomes alive through artist Ulrika Jansson’s site specific work with a stop motion film, installation and performance. Studio Teveddeli was commissioned to design the textile sculpture. The sculpture is made of 40 meters of viscose fabric, sewn together and wrinkled to create the textured surface. The sculpture spans over six meters.

Before landing on the final design, students from the Swedish School of Textiles took part in a pre-study, giving their take on how Åabusen could be embodied. They were briefed to take inspiration from Studio Teveddeli’s Koljöfjorden apart from the river itself.

The exhibition is part of the artistic research project “Shimmer & Härvor” initiated by Thomas Laurien and Theo Ågren.
