Outstanding knits

Exploring the notion of pile knit through
bindings, materials and scale in a spatial context.

Outstanding knits is an explorative project where the aim is to explore the knitting technique of pile knit. Pile textiles are fabrics with tufts or loops of fibres standing up from the base fabric. The primary motive for this study is to use this definition onto the field of knitting and position it in a spatial context. This study takes advantage of knitting’s ability to hook other materials into the textile while you knit.

By abstracting the definition of pile textiles a theoretical and practical model was developed. The model served both as a setup for developing ideas and as a framework to evaluate design experiments against. The study is practice based, grounded on design experiments constructed on hand knitting machines, where various bindings and scale were combined with wool and monofilament yarns together with the non-textile material wood.

This project displays pile knit from the perspectives of bindings, materials and scale.
